Diploma Programme Model – Grades XI & XII
The aLphabet DP Curriculum Framework
The Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum is made up of six subject groups and the DP core,
comprising theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS) and the extended essay.
Through the Diploma Programme (DP) core, students reflect on the nature of knowledge, complete
independent research and undertake a project that often involves community service.
Three components make up the DP core, which are studied alongside individual subjects and
throughout a student’s time in the DP.
1. Theory of knowledge , in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we
know what we claim to know. This unifies the academic disciplines.
2. The extended essay , which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with
a 4,000-word paper. This is an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the DP subjects
we are taking.
3. Creativity, activity, service (CAS) in which students complete a project related to those
three concepts. Learners are required to get involved with creative, physical and
charitable/voluntary activities within communities on a local, national and global level.
